Superfood Green Smoothie

IMG_1163.JPG

Smoooothie operator! This really is a superfood smoothie that tastes absolutely amazing and it's my post workout go-to. So many nutrient dense ingredients - just ONE teaspoon of spirulina powder has 150% of your gaily recommended B12 and 130% vitamin A! If some of these ingredients are unfamiliar to you or if you're just curious about the nutritious superfood powers - read on my friends!

MACA
Maca root is an adaptogen and a member of the cruciferous family, like broccoli and cabbage, but due to it’s unique properties it's considered one of the world’s natural super foods. Maca is grown high in the mountains of South America, mainly in high altitude regions of Peru.

Another unique fact about maca root is that historically it has been considered a very potent aphrodisiac and a traditional fertility secret of populations living in the Andes.

Consuming maca often makes people feel more “alive”, energetic, and leaves them with a sense of well-being, all of which are thought to be due to its ability to restore proper hormone balance and elevate “feel good” endorphins. Another benefit of maca is its relatively high amount of absorbable plant-based nutrients, including protein, fiber, calcium and magnesium, among others.

SPIRULINA
I mean, I love the ocean and water in general - but I think I've taken it too far this time. This very pigmented (think urban decay eyeshadow pigmented) green superfood is actually freshwater algae. Yup, legit. I put algae in my smoothies now. That's a thing #2017. But it's now one of the most researched, and alongside its cousin chlorellamost talked about superfoods today. Grown around the world from Mexico to Africa to even Hawaii, spirulina is renowned for its intense flavour and even more powerful nutrition profile.
