Cacao: A Superfood You’re Sure to Love

You really cannot beat a decadent block of high quality dark chocolate, and guess what? It's a SUPERFOOD. Yup, cacao is a antioxidant rich delicious snack with a great manganese and iron profile. What a great/useful fact, just in time for the holidays where chocolate is acceptably consumed at each meal :D

Cacao vs Cocoa
It's pretty amazing how one little letter can change everything. Commonly confused, cocoa and cacao are different foods, so it's important to take note when scanning the grocery shelves. Although they share a lot of similarities (like they’re interchangeably used in baking, smoothies and other recipes), cocoa is less nutrient dense, more processed and it usually has added sugar.

Cacao is much more nutrient-dense, less processed, is raw and has no sugar added. It’s an excellent source of monounsaturated fat, cholesterol-free saturated fat, vitamins, minerals, fiber, natural carbohydrates and protein. 

 What is Cacao?
Cacao is the source of original, natural chocolate and is the purest form of chocolate you can consume as it comes from the fruit of the cacao tree. What most of us think of as chocolate (typical chocolate bars like Mars, Hershey’s, etc) contains no cacao at all — which means it does not contain its healthful, nutrient-packed phytochemicals that our bodies need.

Organic, raw cacao is a superfood containing a variety of unique phytonutrients, including high amounts of sulfur, magnesium and phenylethylamine (say that three times fast 😅). These characteristics provide many benefits, such as focus and alertness, while also keeping you in a great mood. Cacao nibs even have more antioxidant activity than tea, wine, blueberries and even goji berries! Ultimately, it’s the flavonoids in cacao that makes it an above-and-beyond superfood.
